Curriculum objective This graduate course unit examines worship in varying developmental, social and cultural contexts.

Learning outcomes At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. appraise contemporary social and cultural contexts, including new technologies and online opportunities, and their impact on worship
  2. analyse and take account of the social, cultural, corporate, and developmental context of worshippers
  3. creatively design worship services incorporating variations in style and structure
  4. critique worship services, including online worship, with reference to their social and cultural context
  5. lead worship services that effectively communicate in different contexts

Content

  1. The purpose of and skills for leadership in worship in church and other settings
  2. The nature, rationale for, and purpose of participation in worship
  3. Preparation for worship including the elements of a worship service, the relationship between them, and the choice of hymns, music, symbols, and imagery
  4. Online worship
  5. Worship in response to culture, mission, pastoral issues, ethical context, technology, change and development

Assessment profile In this unit, the required assessment tasks will enable students to demonstrate how successfully they can:

  1. Analyse recent writing on social and cultural context and trends [Outcomes 1 and 4]
  2. Present a coherent and advanced theological understanding of the practice of worship and cultural context [Outcomes 2 and 3]
  3. Creatively apply the basic principles of contextual worship design to one or more pastoral contexts [Outcomes 2, 3 and 5]
