Curriculum objective This graduate unit explores the interplay of creativity and spirituality, with specific focus on how engagement with a creative process may also enhance the student’s spiritual practice, self-growth and mentoring of others. Students will be introduced to creative and spiritual practices that are informed by contemporary creative frameworks as well as theologically reflect upon these practices.  

Learning outcomes At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. compare different theories, models and methods of creativity and of initiating a creative process
  2. evaluate various approaches to integrating creativity and spiritual expression in the context of contemporary literature on the topic
  3. discriminate between various works of creativity in the light of Christian spirituality and theology
  4. develop their own inner/spiritual life through the use of creative expression
  5. adapt and personalise creative practices to cultivate their own creative and spiritual life with a view to mentoring others

  4. Symbolism, imagery metaphor and narrative in creative works
  5. Nurturing personal and corporate spirituality through creativity
  6. Creativity and the Kingdom of God – prophetic social engagement

Assessment profile In this unit, the required assessment tasks will enable students to demonstrate how successfully they can:

  1. Critically reflect on creative works in light of relevant theological and theoretical frameworks for their contribution to Christian spirituality. [Outcomes 1, 3]
  2. Draw from contemporary literature to evaluate approaches to integrating creativity and spirituality. [Outcome 2]
  3. Use creative expression to cultivate their own spirituality and adapt their practice to be of benefit to others. [Outcomes 4, 5]
