Curriculum objective This course unit builds on earlier units in Christology, soteriology and ecclesiology. It aims to develop a basic pattern for sacramental life and show its application in the individual sacraments.
Learning outcomes At the end of this unit students will be able to:
- Present a clear statement of the biblical and liturgical foundations of the sacraments
- Articulate a theology of sacrament that takes account of their theological tradition
- Analyse the theological development of one or more sacraments in the light of their liturgical development
- Develop a coherent and critically informed response to contemporary issues in sacramental theology
- Apply the principles of sacramental theology to specific pastoral situations
Content
- The theological paradigm of all sacraments
- The historical, liturgical and theological background to selected sacraments
- The place of sacraments in the church
- Pastoral issues relating to sacramental practice in the church
- Ecumenical advances in understanding the sacraments
Assessment profile In this unit, the required assessment tasks will enable students to demonstrate how successfully they can:
- Analyse the theological principles underpinning recent writing on the sacraments [Outcomes 2, 4]
- Present a coherent theology of one sacrament [Outcomes 1, 2, 3]
- Offer a critique of current pastoral practice in the light of the theology of sacraments [Outcomes 3, 5]
