Curriculum objective This course unit introduces students to the disciplines of theology and science in relation to one another from the ancient period up to the contemporary period, including the points of similarity and difference in the views and methods of these disciplines. The unit will explore some of the earliest evidence available about intersections between a theological and scientific world view and proceed to an exploration of major turning points, taking examples from key points in history, and many decisive scientific insights.
Learning outcomes At the end of this unit students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the differences and commonalities between the perspectives and methodologies of theology and science
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which the two disciplines have intersected throughout history
- Bring the methodologies of theology and science into conversation with one another around areas of common interest
- Critically evaluate contemporary discussions about the intersection of science and faith
- Apply their understanding of the differences and commonalities between theology and science to professional practice

Assessment profile In this unit, the required assessment tasks will enable students to demonstrate how successfully they can:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between theology and science over time (outcomes 1 and 2)
- Use the methodologies of theology and science to analyse areas of common interest and of contemporary dialogue (outcomes 3 and 4)
- Apply their skills and understanding of the relationship between theology and science to professional practice (outcome 5)
